No midi device! Can't play midi files!?

Ever since I got my new computer I can play any type of song files (.mp3, .wav, .wma, etc) except midi. My computer can't play any midi files at all. Well recently I found out that this is because my computer doesn't have a 'midi device'. What exactly is it and how can I get one?
