Reading bible..........and disgusted.Is God evil?

I've been reading select bible stories( I've known of them but havent actually read them myself until now). and I'm really shocked at what the so called just God has done. For example, in Job he tortures a wonderful man just to prove point to Satan. Thats so cruel. Another is when he traumatized that other good man by telling him to kill his son. Why, that seems like an evil thing to do, even though he stopped him in the end. Or how about when he lead his own people to die of thirst and famine after they already were slaves for hundreds of years? This guy is evil, not just. And people should pray to him out of fear if nothing else.
